Chipping Green Turf and Putting Green Combos for Longwood Golf Enthusiasts

Backyard putting green with two flags, a separate chipping area, and tropical landscaping beside a patio.

A backyard chipping and putting green gives you a place to work on your short game any evening, without driving to the course. Built right, with a compacted aggregate base, real drainage, chipping green turf around the edges, and well-placed cups, it holds up to Florida heat and summer storms and stays ready to use with very little upkeep.

At From the Ground Up Landscaping, we design and install custom putting greens for homeowners in Longwood and across Central Florida. To start planning yours, reach out to our team or call (407) 501-2107.

Why build a chipping and putting green at home in Longwood?

Because the short game is where most golfers lose strokes, and it is the easiest part to practice at home. A combo green lets you work on putting and chipping in the same space, a few steps from your back door.

Longwood has plenty of golfers. If you play at Wekiva Golf Club or anywhere else around Seminole County, you know how much a few saved strokes around the green matter. Fifteen minutes of practice after work adds up over a season.

Natural grass greens are not realistic for most backyards here. The varieties used on real greens need daily low mowing, careful watering, and constant treatment to survive Florida heat. Synthetic turf gives you a true roll without that workload.

Longwood yards also tend to have mature oaks and sandy soil. Both affect where a green should go and how it is built, which is why planning matters before anything is dug.

How is a combined chipping and putting green built?

It starts below the surface. The area is excavated and graded to the contours you want, whether that is a flat practice surface or gentle breaks that make putts more realistic.

Next comes the base. We use a 3/8 inch minus aggregate base, compacted for stability. That base gives the green a firm, smooth surface and lets water drain through quickly instead of pooling.

Then the putting turf is laid. We use premium artificial putting green turf with dense, soft, UV-stabilized fibers and a high-quality backing. Infill is worked in to stabilize the fibers and add cushioning, which affects both ball speed and how a chip shot reacts when it lands.

Cups are installed at the proper depth, and we can add multiple cup placements so you practice different lengths and angles. Around the green, fringe or chipping green turf frames the putting surface and gives you a realistic area to chip from. See our custom putting greens.

How does a putting green handle Florida heat and rain?

A well-built green handles both. The aggregate base drains fast, so even after a heavy summer storm, the surface is usually ready to use again quickly.

Rain is the bigger test of the build. In Longwood, afternoon storms can drop a lot of water fast. Without a proper base and grading, water sits on the surface and the green can stay soggy or develop low spots. With the right base, it runs off and drains through.

Heat affects the surface more than the structure. UV-stabilized fibers are designed to hold their color and shape in strong sun. Like any synthetic turf, the surface can get warm in direct afternoon sun, so many homeowners practice in the morning or evening, which fits an after-work routine anyway.

Shade from oaks helps with heat, but it brings leaves and acorns. A quick blow-off keeps the roll true. With proper installation and maintenance, a putting green typically lasts 10 to 15 years.

How much space do you need, and what design choices matter?

You need less space than most people think. Even a modest corner can hold a putting surface with a few cups, and a slightly larger area lets you add a fringe and a short chipping approach.

The most useful designs include a few cup positions at different distances, some gentle break, and fringe on at least one side so you can practice chips of different lengths. Think about where you will stand to chip, and leave enough room behind you for a full short-game swing.

Placement matters too. One customer wanted a place to practice after work. As he showed us the corner of the yard he had in mind, his wife came out and pointed out that it was where the girls were building a fairy house.

We worked out a plan that let both coexist. Good design fits how your whole family uses the yard, not just the golfer.

Is artificial turf lower maintenance than natural grass?

Yes, by a wide margin. A synthetic green does not need mowing, fertilizer, or pesticides, and it conserves water compared with natural grass.

Upkeep mostly means keeping debris off the surface and occasionally brushing the fibers. That is a few minutes here and there, not daily work. The green is usable right after installation, too, so you can start practicing the same day the crew finishes.

Many homeowners pair a putting green with artificial grass in the rest of the yard. It stays green year round, is soft and itch-free, and works well for kids and pets. Learn more about our artificial grass installation.
