What did this Oviedo artificial grass installation include?
This Oviedo backyard is now a flush artificial grass lawn and play area for the kids. We removed the old yard completely, built up the soil level, bordered the turf with drainage rock and PVC boards, and finished it with silica sand infill.
Oviedo is home for us. Our office sits on Gould Place, so this job was a short drive, and the yard looked like a lot of the backyards we see around town. Big live oaks hang Spanish moss over the back fence line, so much of the lawn sits in shade for a good part of the day. A screened lanai and a patio open straight onto the grass. The family wanted one level surface the kids could play on without tripping over low spots.

Why build up the soil before installing artificial grass?
Because turf copies whatever is under it. A low yard stays a low yard after the grass goes down, so we raised the grade first to get a flush, even surface.
Full removal came before any of that. The old grass, roots, and weeds all came out, since anything organic left behind breaks down over time and leaves soft spots. Kids find those spots fast. Then we brought in soil and built the level back up across the yard, working it until the surface sat even with the edges around it instead of dipping below them.
That extra step matters more in Oviedo than people expect. Most of Seminole County sits on loose, sandy ground, and sand moves when a heavy summer afternoon storm rolls through. A yard that already sits low collects that water. Raise it and grade it evenly, and the rain has somewhere to go.
The payoff shows up every day. The turf meets the patio edge cleanly, and the kids get a flat, predictable surface for running around.
How do drainage rock and PVC boards protect the lawn?
The rock gives water a fast way out, and the PVC boards give the turf a solid edge to hold onto. Together they keep the borders clean and dry.
Look along the patio side of the yard and you will see a strip of gray drainage rock running between the turf and the hardscape. Water coming off the patio has somewhere to go there, so instead of sheeting across the lawn or pooling against the slab, it drops through the rock and soaks into the sandy ground below. Under a big oak canopy, which keeps dripping long after a storm passes, that matters.
The PVC boards sit between the rock and the turf. They hold the edge of the grass in a straight, secure line so it cannot curl up or creep into the rock bed. Why PVC and not wood? Wood edging sitting in wet Florida ground can rot. PVC will not, so the border should stay straight for years.
It also keeps loose stones out of the play area, which matters when small feet are running barefoot. If you want rock beds elsewhere in the yard, our gravel and decorative rock crews can match the same stone.
Why use silica sand infill for a kids play area?
Silica sand weighs the turf down and holds the blades upright. That keeps the lawn flat, stable, and full looking even after a lot of running and tumbling.
After the turf was stretched and secured, the crew spread silica sand across the whole lawn and brushed it down into the fibers. It settles at the base of the blades, where you cannot see it. What you do notice is how the grass behaves. It stands back up after being stepped on, it does not shift or ripple, and the seams stay put.
Kids were the reason for this project. Natural grass has a hard time under heavy oak shade, and thin spots turn to mud after a rain. Turf stays green in the shade, dries off quickly, and never needs mowing. And the lanai looks right out over the whole play area.
