What did this Orlando pet turf installation include?

This Orlando backyard is now artificial grass for pets, built for dogs that spend a big part of the day outside. We did a full removal of the old yard, prepped the ground, installed drainage rock and PVC boards, laid the turf, and finished it with Envirofill infill to fight odors and bacteria.

The layout is a classic Orlando pool home. A screened pool enclosure runs down one side of the yard. A white vinyl privacy fence wraps the rest, with hanging planters clipped along the top, and a shade tree near the back of the house throws patchy light across the lawn most afternoons. Natural grass has a rough time in that kind of broken shade. Put dogs on it every day, running the same line along the fence and pacing outside the pool cage, and it turns to bare sand and mud after the first summer storm.

Why does full removal and prep matter for dog turf?

Because anything left under the turf is where the urine ends up. Old grass and roots rot, hold moisture, and start to smell, so all of it came out.

Orlando yards sit on sandy soil that drains well on its own. Dogs change that. Years of running the same routes pack the sand hard, and a packed yard sheds water sideways instead of letting it soak in. We cut out the old sod and roots, graded the area so water moves away from the house and the pool deck, and compacted a new base firm enough that it will not rut when a dog sprints and cuts hard at the fence. The side yard needed extra care. There is an electrical post with conduit coming out of the ground there, and we cut the turf tight around it so there is no loose edge to dig at or chew.

Then the drainage rock. It gives liquid a fast path down and away from the surface instead of letting it sit under the backing. PVC boards line the edges and give the turf something solid to fasten to. We skip wood on pet jobs, since it rots in wet Florida ground and a hose running on it every week only speeds that up. PVC holds its shape. We used the same rock and PVC approach on an artificial grass installation in Oviedo with drainage rock, though that yard was built for kids, not dogs.

How does Envirofill infill stop pet odors and urine hot spots?

Envirofill is a coated infill with antimicrobial protection built into the coating, so it slows the bacteria that turn urine into odor. That is why we use it on pet installs instead of plain silica sand.

The trouble with dogs and turf is simple. Urine drains through the backing, but a little always clings to the infill down at the base of the fibers. Plain sand holds onto it. Then an Orlando July afternoon bakes the surface, and that leftover urine becomes the sharp ammonia smell people wrongly blame on the turf itself. Envirofill's coating does not soak up liquid the way raw sand does. The antimicrobial protection keeps bacteria from building up between rinses.

It helps with hot spots too. Every dog has a favorite corner. On real grass that corner goes yellow, then brown, then bare. Turf cannot burn, and with Envirofill in place the favorite corner rinses clean with a garden hose. If you have more than one dog, rinse the busiest areas once a week in summer and keep an enzyme cleaner on hand for the worst spots.
